SIRVA and Rotator Cuff Tears

by | Apr 30, 2024 | Firm News |

Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration, or “SIRVA” is a side effect associated with vaccine administration. It occurs when a vaccine is injected too high into the shoulder joint, and symptoms start very soon after injection.  Symptoms of SIRVA include:

Shoulder pain that persists beyond the usual soreness after vaccination.
Reduced range of motion in the affected shoulder.
Shoulder weakness.
Unimproved pain over time.

SIRVA has been linked to all vaccines. It can be an extraordinarily painful injury and take months to years for recovery.   In some cases, the angle of injection can lead to a partial or complete tear of the rotator cuff.  The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, keeping the upper arm bone in place.  In some instances, a doctor may tell a patient that due to the presence of the cuff tear, the injury is not due to vaccination, implying that it must have been pre-existing. Actually, in studies done on this injury, as many as 15% of SIRVA cases had rotator cuff tears requiring surgery.
